World War I Memorial!

World War I Memorial

What Is the World War I Memorial?

The World War I Memorial is an extension of Pershing Park, commemorating the lives lost in the “War to End All Wars!”

What Makes It Beautiful?

Hemmed in on all sides by stone walls and steps, this memorial has the feel of a trench that made the first World War so distinct. At its eastern end stands John Pershing, General of the Armies, who led the successful campaign that led to German defeat, flanked by a panel of maps and information about those actions. But the real feast for the eyes here is a bronze panel called The Soldier’s Journey by Sabin Howard. In 38 figures, it shows one soldier’s experience of the war from departure to glory to loss to return, all reflected in a thin pool and backed by brilliant leaves in the autumn! Sit on the steps and meditate on quotes etched in stone, or watch the expressions of the metal faces. Here is a quiet place away from the other memorials to reflect on a war that, in many ways, launched the modern age!
