Bixby Knolls “National Park!”

What Is Bixby Knolls “National Park”?

This 0.05-acre garden in Long Beach markets itself as the smallest national park in the world!

What Makes It Wonderful?

Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, this was just an average empty corner lot, but in 2021, Blair Cohn, executive director of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, decided it needed a makeover. With funding running low, the rest of the Association agreed this would be the perfect last hurrah! So, the group planted some native plants, commissioned some carved “wildlife,” added a visitor center—well, a “Visitors Enter” sign—and installed a mural to give it the magnificent view that national parks are known for! All things considered, it’s not that much bigger than Mill Ends Park in Portland, but it sure is immune from congressional budget cuts! If you love a bit of silliness mixed with nature, stop on by! Just be sure not to disturb the gnomes, snipes, or Bigfoot!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Donate to the Bixby Knolls Community Foundation!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
