What is it? | Two plaques in the foothills of Fresno County! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This was said to be the headquarters of notorious bandit Joaquin Murrieta who made a career of terrorizing mining camps and stage operations. He was killed here July 25, 1853 by a posse of state rangers led by Captain Harry Love.
OTHER TIDBITS: This was a bounty hunt! Captain Love’s posse captured Joaquín Murrieta’s brother in law and forced him to lead them to Joaquín’s hideout. They outnumbered and shot Joaquín and his second in command, Tres Dedos, then cut off Joaquin’s head and the famed tres dedos, preserved them in whiskey, and took them back to Stockton to collect their $6,000 reward! |
