Landmark #519 | Shasta County | Visited: May 11, 2012 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing! Nothing but a street intersection! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Erected in 1851 by J. J. Bell, this was an important toll bridge on the road from Shasta City to Tehama. Bell’s Mansion, erected in 1859 on Clear Creek, was a favorite stopping place for miners on their way to the Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou gold fields.
OTHER TIDBITS: Actually, Joseph Jones Bell had a ferry here in 1851. He didn’t put in the bridge until December of 1853! Mr. Bell was the principal stockholder of the Original Williams and Kellinger Gold, Silver and Copper Mining Company, and first postmaster of the Bell’s Bridge Post Office! |
