What is it? | A plaque outside the Naval Weapons Station of Seal Beach! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Soon after the founding of the Mother Colony at Anaheim in 1857, the Anaheim Landing Company established Anaheim Landing as a port for the Santa Ana Valley. Despite treacherous entrance conditions that caused several disasters, regular coastwise trade was carried on here for about 15 years.
OTHER TIDBITS: Anaheim Landing was Orange County’s first seaport and the center of southern California’s grape trade! From a pier and wharf installed by the Anaheim Lighter Company, lumber and building supplies from the north came in and wine and agriculture went out! The bay here was so shallow that most cargo ships weren’t able to get in to shore and relied on smaller boats to carry the cargo. Until the railroad provided a faster means of getting goods up and down California, this port handled up to 6,000 tons of exports and 5,000 tons of imports each year! For that reason, it had to be well-fortified during the Mexican-American and Civil Wars! |
