What is it? |
Walnut Canyon National Monument is a deep canyon where dozens of ancient Sinagua homes are built into the sides of the cliffs! |
What makes it beautiful? |
Picture a deep, green canyon in the middle of the desert. In the middle, a huge island of rock juts up from the depths, and around it, a whole community of ancient stone houses! That’s Walnut Canyon! The Island Trail descends down into the spectacular canyon, and you can walk around the “island” where Sinagua people made their homes high on the cliffs until 1400 AD! These houses are beautifully tucked into place under a rocky overhang on the desert side of a canyon that blends desert and pine forest seemlessly. It’s a unique home for plants, animals, and people alike! |
