Landmark #330 | Butte County | Visited: July 10, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque at the end of the parking lot at Lake Oroville State Recreation Area! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: From 1853 to 1856, Bidwell’s Bar served as the second county seat of Butte County. The site of the courthouse, now inundated by Oroville Reservoir, is 120 yards west of this small monument.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. John Bidwell found gold near here in 1848, shortly after the discovery at Sutter’s Mill! Naturally, this became a big target for prospectors, and a whole town sprung up around Bidwell’s Bar! Over the years, the county seat skipped gradually downriver, from Hamilton, to Bidwell, to Oroville, where it sits today! Bidwell’s suspension bridge kept the town relevant until 1937, when the Feather River Highway made the bridge obsolete! |
