Landmark #910 | Santa Clara County | Visited: August 28, 2016 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Saint Joseph Cathedral Basilica is still open for Mass! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established in 1803, St. Joseph’s was the first non-mission church in a Spanish California settlement. The present edifice, designed in Italian baroque style by noted architect Bryan C. Clinch, is the fourth to be built at the original site. Its cornerstone was laid March 19, 1876, and it was dedicated April 22,1877.
OTHER TIDBITS: This church sure struggled with fires and earthquakes throughout its construction period, but thanks to its resilience, it is now a cathedral (headquarters of the diocese) and a basilica (declared important by the pope and granted rights to house an umbrella-shaped conopaeum, carry a tintinnabulum bell, and wear the cappa magna, all symbols of papal authority)! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
