| What is it? | The Yucaipa Adobe Museum! |
| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Constructed in 1842 by Diego SepĂșlveda, nephew of Antonio MarĂa Lugo, this is believed to be the oldest house in San Bernardino County. The land, formerly controlled by San Gabriel Mission, was part of the Rancho San Bernardino granted to the Lugos in 1842. The adobe’s later owners included John Brown, Sr., James W. Waters, and the Dunlap family, it was acquired by San Bernardino County in 1955.
OTHER TIDBITS: This might surprise you, but there was a new discovery made since this plaque was placed! Diego SepĂșlveda’s adobe was actually a few hundred yards away from this spot. The Yucaipa Adobe we can visit today was built instead by James Waters between 1858 and 1859! Mr. Waters was a hunter, trapper, and mountaineer who came to California with Jim Beckwourth and became a rancher, landowner, and three-time County Supervisor of San Bernardino County! |
