Landmark #206 | Kings County | Visited: February 18, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque in someone’s front yard! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This restored adobe, second oldest in San Joaquin Valley, was built by Daniel Rhoades, who came to California in 1846 by overland caravan. Rhoades and his brother, John, were among organizers of the first expedition that attempted to rescue the Donner party at Donner Lake. Built in 1856, the adobe has been continuously occupied since.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Rhoades was part of the first expedition to save the Donner-Reed Party, trekking on snowshoes into the mountains at a rate of maximum seven miles per day! They were able to rescue the first twenty-one people, but those who had to wait for the next rescue party famously had to resort to cannibalism! After this event, Mr. Rhoades made $8,000 during the Gold Rush, returned briefly to Missouri in 1851, then once more trekked to California, where he made his living as a rancher and later, a banker! |
