| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The Clay Street Hill Railroad Company, the first cable railroad system in the world, was invented and installed by Andrew S. Hallidie. It started operation on August 1, 1873 and ceased on February 15, 1942.
OTHER TIDBITS: These original San Francisco cable cars ran along Clay Street from Kearny to Leavenworth! There was a driver car and a passenger car, and they were powered by a powerhouse on the Leavenworth end. The track extended west to Van Ness Avenue in 1877 and was converted to a single track in 1891! |
