What makes it historical? |
Once just a hotel called Hotel Anaya, built in 1907, this building became the seat of government for the newly created Republic of Mexico in 1914! President Venustiano Carranza, having ousted dictator, Porfirio Diaz, set up his offices in this building. He would go on to nationalize the Mexican oil industry and keep Mexico neutral during World War I.
His social reforms were sluggish, though which made him an enemy of Pancho Villa, who attacked Agua Prieta on November 1, 1915! Though Presidente Carranza himself was not present, the troops of General Plutarco Elías Calles, who had been stationed here at Hotel Central, defended the town well enough that Villa, running low on supplies and ammunition, had to retreat! |
