What is it? |
Prasat Baphuon (ប្រាសាទបាពួន) is a pyramid-shaped Hindu temple in the ancient city of Angkor Thom! |
What makes it historical? |
Built before Bayon during the reign of Udayadityavarman II, Baphuon was the state temple of Yasodharapura, the name of this city before it became Angkor Thom. Once covered in bronze plates, the years have not been kind to this temple because it was built on a bed of sand! It was also damaged during the attempts to convert the temple to Buddhism in the 16th century. The structure couldn’t support the giant reclining Buddha being installed, and unfortunately, many of the artwork was also destroyed in the process. Today, much of Baphuon has been disassembled and reassembled, piece by piece! |
