| What makes it wonderful? |
Back in 1944, a radio evangelist named Curtis Springer filed a “mining” claim here and set up a healing resort around the natural spring that rose here out of the desert crust! Here, folks could soak in the healing springs and indulge in the fake remedies that Mr. Springer was happy to sell here. He named his new “town” Zzyzx, which would put it solidly at the end of the atlas. In the 1970s, the local government found out what Mr. Springer was up to and shut him down. Not to let his resort go to waste, though, they gave the facility to California State University to become a Desert Studies Center! |
