What is it? | A plaque marking the site of St. Mary’s College! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In August 1863, Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany, OP, opened St. Mary’s College here with a faculty of two diocesan priests, four laymen, and two student teachers. In August 1868, at the invitation of the archbishop, Brother Justin McMahon and seven Christian Brothers took charge of St. Mary’s.
OTHER TIDBITS: St. Mary’s is one of the oldest colleges in the west! Back when it was founded, day students paid $60 per academic year! Students who lived on campus paid $250 a year! The college has since moved to Moraga! |
