Landmark #4116 | Presidio County | Visited: October 1, 2018 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A roadside plaque out of Marfa! |
What makes it historical? | THE PLAQUE SAYS: Formed from Bexar County created January 3, 1850, organized March 13, 1875. So named for the early “Fortress garrisoned by soldiers.” Erected for the protection of the Big Bend missions. County seat Fort Davis, 1875, Marfa, since 1885. (1936)
OTHER TIDBITS: The division of the Trans Pecos region was sort of like the opening of a Russian nesting doll! First, there was Bexar County, from which split off Presidio County, named for the Spanish Presidio del Norte! Then, Pecos County split off from Presidio County in 1871, then in 1887, Brewster and Jeff Davis Counties split off as well! Fort Davis was originally the county seat, but when the Southern Pacific Railway came through, the seat moved closer to the line in Marfa! For many years, the Presidio Mine near Shafter was the main producer of precious metals, mostly silver, in all of Texas! |
