What is it? | It’s the Oklahoma State Capitol Building! |
What makes it historical? | This mighty Beaux Arts capitol building is the only one in the country that’s surrounded by active oil wells! It took three years to build, from July 20, 1914 until June 30, 1917, under the direction of the firm of Layton and Smith, and constructed by the James Stewart Company! The state government actually had to hire a federal supervisor named Edward P. Boyd because they didn’t want any funny business with the $1.5 million they’d budgeted for construction (about $37 million by today’s standards)! Originally, there wasn’t a dome because it was too expensive, but in 1998, the Oklahoma Centennial Act passed, dedicating $20.8 million to setting a dome on top of the capitol complex! That was finished on November 16, 2002! |
