What makes it historical? |
While folks were driving out of the Dust Bowl en masse in the 1930s, 210 workers stayed behind to build the Anadarko Armory under the supervision of the Works Progress Administration (WPA)! The armory was built to serve three units of the National Guard’s 45th Infantry Division, which would go on to serve in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy during World War II!
The building remains an original, intact example of WPA architecture, a throwback to FDR’s New Deal! This was one of 51 armory projects in Oklahoma, which brought $3.5 million back into Oklahoma’s economy during the Great Depression! |
