Carolands
Landmark #886 San Mateo County Visited: November 16, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A massive mini-palace built by Harriet Pullman Carolan!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Harriet Pullman Carolan, heiress to the Pullman railroad car company fortune, constructed this lavish mini-palace in 1915-16, the focal point of a fully landscaped 500-acre estate. Willis Polk supervised construction of the American Renaissance-design residence, which is an adaptation of Vaux le Vicomte, also prototype for the Palace of Versailles. In the early 1950s, Countess Lillian Remillard Dandini acquired the chateau and the six remaining acres of land.

OTHER TIDBITS: It isn’t always easy affording a palace, and Harriet Carolan had her fair share of money problems. They got so bad that much of the interior remained unfinished for years, and after she separated from her husband in 1917, she rarely returned. After she died, the mansion passed through many hands and fell to disrepair until purchased and restored by the Johnson family over four years until 2002! Where will it go from here? We’ll have to wait and see!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the San Mateo County History Museum!
  • Become a member of the San Mateo County History Museum!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
