What is it? | The headquarters for Spanish political influence in the Santa Barbara channel region! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This presidio was established April 19-21, 1782 by Governor Felipe de Neve, Padre JunĂpero Serra, and Lieutenant JosĂ© Francisco Ortega, under orders of King Carlos III to provide the benefits of government for the inhabitants of the Santa Barbara Channel region of California.
OTHER TIDBITS: This was the fourth and final Spanish presidio established in Alta California! The park contains buildings left over from the Spanish, Mexican, and American occupations, displaying an eclectic array of architecture! One of the adobes belonged to Santiago de la Cruz Pico, one of the members of the 1776 Anza Expedition and grandfather to PĂo Pico, the last Mexican governor of Alta California! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
