Landmark #659 | Ventura County | Visited: Sept. 11, 2011 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | An old inn on the Coast Stage Line, now a museum used as a venue for parties and weddings! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Originally located some 200 yards to the north, the Stagecoach Inn was built in 1876. Its redwood lumber came by sea and was freighted up the steep Conejo Grade by multiteam wagons. From 1887 to 1901, the hotel served as a regular depot for the Coast Stage Line, which carried both passengers and mail. In 1965 it was moved to its present location.
OTHER TIDBITS: The Stagecoach Inn was originally called the Grand Union Hotel, the first commercial use building in the Conejo Valley! In the mid-1960s, the Conejo Valley Historical Society saved the inn from being demolished to make room for the current 101 freeway! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
