| What is it? | An artificial island that once housed the Golden Gate International Exposition! |
| What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This artificial island was constructed of bay sand in 1936-7. It was the site of the Golden Gate International Exposition, February 18, 1939-September 29, 1940. Tall towers, gigantic goddesses and dazzling lighting effects turned the Island into a “Magic City.” The exposition celebrated the ascendancy of California and San Francisco as economic, political and cultural forces in the increasingly important Pacific Region. From 1939 to 1944 the Island was the landing site for flights of the China Clipper. Treasure Island has been a U.S. Naval Station since 1941.
OTHER TIDBITS: A large portion of the silt used to build Treasure Island came from the Sacramento River delta. Since this was the river where a great deal of gold had been discovered, the rumor had it that there was gold dust in the very foundation of the island, making it a real “Treasure Island!” You may also recognize the Administration building as the “Berlin airport” in Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
