What makes it historical? |
When the Schimpff family moved to Jeffersonville from Bavaria, the boys of the family set to building one sweet career! As early as the 1850s, they were selling candies on the streets of Louisville, with the first store opening in Jeffersonville in 1871, owned by Charles Schimpff! Meanwhile, his brother, Gus, was working for a larger candy company, the Frank A. Menne Co., in Louisville. In 1891, their candy careers combined into a single confectionery in Jeffersonville, where they sold classic Red Hots, Modjeskas, and hard fish candy together until Gus died in 1918. Since then, it’s been passed down three generations and is currently (as of 2019) run by Gus’ grandson, Warren, and his wife, Jill, who expanded the shop into a museum! |
