Rhodes Cabin!

Rhodes Cabin

What Is the Rhodes Cabin?

This is an early tourist cabin from the days of Lehman Cave National Monument!

What Makes It Historical?

When Absalom Lehman found a limestone cave near his ranch in what is now Great Basin National Park, word spread quickly, and folks in neighboring communities were quick to check it out! Mr. Lehman led tours until his passing, and ownership of the land went to Mr. C.T. Rhodes in 1920! Mr. Rhodes built several cabins for tourists here, of which this one is the only remaining cabin! He also installed stairs and crawl-holes in the cave and added dining and tea-taking facilities for visitors to enjoy!

After President Harding declared this Lehman Cave National Monument on January 24, 1922, Mr. Rhodes continued to own the surrounding land for ten more years. That’s when the State of Nevada paid him $15,000 for his property, then deeded it to the federal government and National Park Service on September 5, 1933!
