Broad Street Market!

Broad Street Market

What Is the Broad Street Market?

The Broad Street Market is the last of Harrisburg’s six historic indoor/outdoor markets!

What Makes It Historical?

Founded in 1860 to feed the 300,000 Union soldiers stationed at Camp Curtin, the Broad Street Market brought in farm-fresh products from around Pennsylvania, peaking at 725 vendors in the 1920s! Because of an abundance in Amish and Mennonite vendors, it was sometimes called the Dutch Fair, after the “Pennsylvania Dutch!”

The construction of this market took place in three stages: stone in the 1860s, brick in the 1870s, and wood, which would later connect the two sections. The wood part was the first to go when a city ordinance banned outdoor vending entirely. After an extensive restoration and listing on the National Register, the market is open once again with a much smaller count of 40-ish vendors but the same local, organic quality!
