What Is the Georgia State Capitol?
It’s the Georgia State Capitol building!
What Makes It Historical?
In 1887, Atlanta became the permanent state capital, after Louisville then Milledgeville, and a new capitol building was planned on top of what was then city hall! With a budget of $1 million (almost $30 million today), the Board of Commissioners specified that all construction materials had to come from Georgia, unless they could be found cheaper elsewhere.
With that stipulation in mind, they designed the interior in Georgia marble, and the exterior in Indiana limestone! The capitol itself was designed by the Chicago firm of Willoughby Edbrooke & Franklin Burnham and built by Miles & Horne of Toledo, Ohio. It is the only US capitol to be completed under budget! When it opened on June 15, 1889, there was $118.43 left to be returned to the State Treasury! (The gold leaf on the dome was added in 1960…)
