What is it? |
The world’s largest thermometer stands 134 feet tall and beckons to travelers along I-15! |
What makes it wonderful? |
It was a long-time dream of Willis Herron to build a giant thermometer in the middle of the desert, so after 25 years of planning, he hired the Young Electric Sign Company, the same company responsible for many of the lights of Las Vegas, to make his dream come true! As of 1990, the thermometer stands 134 feet tall in honor of the highest temperature ever recorded in the US, and contains 33 tons of steel and close to 5,000 lamps! While it hasn’t been officially logged in the Guinness Book of World Records, it’s still a recognizable landmark that notifies intercity travelers of current desert temperatures! It’s one of my favorite landmarks when I make the drive between Utah and California, and it’s a great landmark for gauging distances! Unfortunately, its founder died in 2007 and it stopped working in 2012, but his daughter has vowed to re-open it! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- The landmark is technically for sale, if you’ve got 2 spare million dollars, but I think the best thing you can do is to photograph it, write about it, and spread its popularity!
