What Makes It Historical?
The firm of Tourtellette & Hummel designed over 39 buldings in Boise between 1906 through 1942. Among them was the Idaho State Capitol building, built between 1906 and 1920! Built from local sandstone to match the surrounding hills, what really makes this capitol shine is, well, the shine! The architects really wanted to maximize natural light inside to represent an enlightened government, so they used skylights and reflective marble surfaces to do just that! This is also the only capitol building in the US that’s heated by geothermal energy, pumping up water from three thousand feet underground!
