Landmark #939-4 | San Bernardino County | Visited: December 17, 2011 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing is left at the site, but there are some neat relics at the Route 66 Museum in Victorville! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Miles Mahan began building Hula Ville in 1955 after retiring as a “carny,” or carnival worker. Over the years, he put his statues and poems together in the desert, on Interstate 15 near Hesperia. Demolished 9/97.
OTHER TIDBITS: Miles Mahan had no family to keep him busy, so he spent many years under the stars, collecting discarded bottles and signs and putting them together into a roadside attraction! The famous hula girl had actually been discarded by a restaurant when he found her and made her his figurehead! When at last, his health began to fail, he had to leave Hula Ville, and it was demolished! |
