What Is the International Cryptozoology Museum?
This is the world’s only museum dedicated to the greater subject of cryptozoology!
What Makes It Historical?
Cryptozoology as a word came to be in 1947 when Ivan T. Sanderson first used it in his articles about sea serpents, and then it was spontaneously reintroduced in 1955 by Bernard Heuvelmans with his seminal work, On the Track of Unknown Animals! This is the study of “hidden animals,” critters that have been referenced in stories, reported in sightings, but never definitively been proven to exist! Since 2003, a huge collection of books, replicas, and evidence of all kinds has made its way to Portland, Maine, where it’s now on display at the International Cryptozoology Museum, founded by famed cryptozoologist, Loren Coleman!
Just about every cryptid you can imagine is featured here from the famous ones like Bigfoot and Mothman to the more obscure like the Dover Demon and the “Montauk Monster!” There are casts of tracks, photographs, interviews with eyewitnesses, and even movie props that show how cryptids have influenced popular culture! See examples of animals thought extinct then rediscovered alive, like the coelacanth! It’s a compact space but rich with wonder and just a hint of kitsch! Who knows what familiar faces you’ll recognize within these walls?!
