What Is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial?
This is the national memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. designed around a specific line in his “I Have a Dream” speech: “With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope!”
What Makes It Beautiful?
This memorial is rich with symbolism! Not only is it directly between the memorial to Thomas Jefferson, who penned independence, and Abraham Lincoln, who penned Emancipation, but it’s also located at 1964 Independence Avenue, SW in honor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964! Designed by Chinese master sculptor, Master Lei Yixin, this pink granite memorial has brought Dr. King’s likeness starkly forward from a mountain shaped wall in the back and surrounded him with his past quotes. It encourages visitors to stand contemplatively, like the 30-foot sculpture of Dr. King and look at the different faces of freedom, as they were and as they could be!
