Fossil Butte National Monument!

Fossil Butte National Monument

What Is Fossil Butte National Monument?

Fossil Butte is a 50-million year old lake bed and one of the richest deposits of fossils in the world!

What Makes It Beautiful?

I have always loved Wyoming clouds, and when there are fluffy clouds over the lush Historic Quarry Trail, it does my heart good! The scenery is lush and very homey, in my opinion, but the true stars of this monument aren’t outdoors at all! The visitor center is home to thousands of beautifully preserved fossil specimens from tiny flowers to giant crocodiles! Each bone and scale has been painstakingly etched out of the rock and polished to a fine shine, making this gallery of prehistoric life truly outstanding!

When Should I Visit the Park?

It’s easiest to access the monument during spring through fall! I suggest a leisurely morning stroll!
