The Church of St. Hubert the Hunter!

Church of St. Hubert the Hunter

What Is the Church of St. Hubert the Hunter?

This is a rustic, one-story Episcopal Church building in Bondurant, Wyoming!

What Makes It Historical?

This church was born out of a blizzard! In the winter of 1937, Episcopalian bishop, Winford H. Ziegler, was headed for Jackson when a blizzard stranded him in the ranching community of Bondurant! The folks were so kind to him that, when he returned to Philadelphia and got to talking with the church president about how to spend money from a diamond gifted to the church, Bishop Ziegler suggested they allocate it for a church in Bondurant!

In 1939, Bishop Ziegler returned to Bondurant and recruited 28 local volunteers to build a church on a single acre parcel specially permitted by Teton National Forest! For such a tiny building, it took a long time to build, with the first wedding happening in a mostly completed church in the fall of 1940. The building itself wasn’t completed until the summer of 1941, when Bishop Ziegler, Governor Nels Smith, and 500 visitors from around the county consecrated this church in the name of St. Hubert, the Bishop of Maastricht who’d seen a vision of a cross in the antlers of a stag, making him the patron saint of hunters! Each man who had helped build the church received a commemorative ax at the ceremony, and the church and library built next to it became a social center for this tiny community!
