What Is the Schaapplaats Farm Rock Art?
This cave is painted with 35 pictographs by ancient San people!
What Makes It Historical?
Just like indigenous folks around the world, the ancient people of the Drakensberg foothills, called Bushmen or San by anthropologists, left behind artistic depictions of their lives and cultures in caves and grottos across the region! All in all, there are about 500 protected caves with 20,688 paintings in the Drakensberg region! Here, their styles were unique and super detailed, painting in multiple shades and giving animals hair and faces! The paintings at Schaapplaats Farm, between 200 and 6,000 years old, feature finely shaded elands, a shaman in a trance, and even a group of therianthropes, which are part human, part animal!
