Landmark #29 | Amador County | Visited: May 9, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque diorama in the town of Volcano! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The spot was discovered in 1848 by Colonel Stevenson’s men, who mined Soldiers Gulch in 1849. By 1853 the flats and gulches swarmed with men who named them picturesquely. Hydraulic operations, begun in 1855, brought thousands of fortune seekers to form a town of 17 hotels, a library, a theater, and courts of quick justice. During the Civil War, Volcano’s gold served the Union – Volcano Blues smuggled the cannon “Old Abe” in by hearse to quell rebels.
OTHER TIDBITS: Volcano got its name because the rocks looked volcanic in origin! The first rental library in California got its start here in the 1850s, and the town was actually popular among traveling theatrical troups, because the money flowed so freely! In 1934, the town narrowly escaped being flooded by a reservoir, but a plaque had already been set up in Pine Grove to mourn the loss of the town! |
