What is it? A brick building that once housed the first purely theatrical establishment in Los Angeles!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The Merced Theatre, erected in 1870 on North Main Street next to the Pico House, was the first building built expressly for theatrical purposes in Los Angeles. It was built by William Abbot, a cabinetmaker, and named in honor of his wife Merced Garcia.

OTHER TIDBITS: This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

The Merced Theatre adjoins the Pico House on the south. It’s no longer distinguished by a sign or marquee, but there is an informative plaque on the west side!
