What is it? | There are still remnants of Douglas Flat, but all that mentions its importance is a road sign! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Douglas Flat was a roaring mining camp of the early 1850s. In 1857 the Harper and Lone Star Claims produced $130,000 worth of gold. The so-called Central Hill Channel, an ancient river deposit from which vast quantities of gold have been taken, is located here.
OTHER TIDBITS: This town was settled mostly by Welsh and Italian families with a notable Chinese presence. Most of the gold came from nearby coyote creek, and from these diggin’s spread a wider ranch-building movement. Early correspondences about this town describe it as “dull.” |
