Michigan became the 26th state of the Union on January 26, 1837! It’s named after the Ojibwe word for “large water,” but you can also call it The Wolverine State! Its capital is Lansing, and its largest city is Detroit! Michigan’s state motto is Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice, which means “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you!” This state is famous for car factories like Henry Ford’s, Motown Records, Isle Royale National Park, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinaw Island, and more!
