The Independent City of Baltimore, Maryland was established on July 30, 1729 and named for Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and founding proprietor of the Colony and Province of Maryland! Lord Baltimore was Irish, and “Baltimore” is the anglicized word for the Gaelic Baile an Tí Mhóir, which means “town of the big house! It is the largest of 41 independent cities in the United States! An independent city is one that is self-governing and not part of a larger county! You might recognize Fort McHenry National Monument, the National Aquarium, Federal Hill, the Edgar Allan Poe House, and the U.S.S. Constitution which are located in Baltimore!
