Our planet has been slowly warming since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, thanks to the greenhouse effect! In 1896, Swedish chemist, Svante Arrhenius, was the first to posit that the coal smoke produced by industry was actually amplifying this effect, a finding confirmed in 1938 when British engineer, Guy Callendar, took readings from 147 weather stations around the world and found that the planet had warmed noticeably in the previous one hundred years! Since then, there have been numerous meetings of world leaders to discuss reducing the billions of tons of greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere each year, but will it be enough to stop the meltdown of our planet?
