For many Americans, Route 66 opened up new avenues of adventure and freedom, but for adventurous African-Americans, the westbound Mother Road held all sorts of dangers: from running out of fuel because gas stations wouldn’t serve them, to being lynched by locals! To help these travelers along the way, postal worker, Victor H. Green, published the Green Book, a guide for African-American travelers that would provide them with the goods and services they needed! The guide ran from 1936 to 1964, and though many of these sites have been demolished, a rare few are still around and deserve our appreciation.
