Las Animas County, Colorado was established on February 9, 1866 and named for the Animas River, whose full name is El Río de las Ánimas Perdidas en el Purgatorio, or “The River of Lost Souls in Purgatory!” Its county seat is Trinidad, and its fair is also in Trinidad! You might recognize the Mesa de Maya, Raton Pass, and site of the Ludlow Massacre, which are located in this county!
