Mariposa County, California was established on February 18, 1850 and named for the thousands of monarch butterflies that come to the Sierra foothills each May! Mariposa is Spanish for “butterfly!” Its county seat is Mariposa, and its fair is also held in Mariposa! You might recognize Yosemite Valley and the California State Mining & Mineral Museum, which are located in this county!
