Montezuma County, Colorado was established on April 16, 1889 and named for Aztec chief, Montezuma II, since the ruins found here were believed to be Aztec in origin! Its county seat is Cortez, and its fair is also held in Cortez! You might recognize Mesa Verde National Park, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, part of Hovenweep National Monument, and many other remnants of the Ancestral Pueblo people, which are located in this county!
