The Donner-Reed Party were westward-bound emigrants who became trapped by snow in the high Sierras and were famously forced to eat their dead friends and relatives to survive! It was actually this practice that kept the local Wel Mel Ti tribe from stepping in to rescue them sooner; the tribe was afraid they would be eaten too!
