Burned Wagon’s Point!

Burned Wagon's Point
Landmark #441 Inyo County Visited: December 31, 2011 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque and wagon wheels marking the despair and resilience of the lost Jayhawkers!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Near this monument, the Jayhawker group of Death Valley ’49ers, gold seekers from the Middle West who entered Death Valley in 1849 seeking a short route to the mines of central California, burned their wagons, dried the meat of some oxen and, with surviving animals, struggled westward on foot.

OTHER TIDBITS: Ironically, the Jayhawkers were the group who stuck to the plan! While they were able to get out of the valley by themselves, unlike the Bennet-Arcane group, it still required great sacrifices to do so!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Death Valley 49ers!
  • Donate to the Death Valley 49ers!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
