Santo Domingo de La Calzada Cathedral!

Santo Domingo de La Calzada Cathedral
What is it? This cathedral (circa 1158 AD) houses the remains of Santo Domingo de La Calzada and honors his most famous miracle!
What makes it historical? Santo Domingo de La Calzada really did his best to join the Benedictine Order, but he just couldn’t make the cut! Not to be daunted by protocol, he became a hermit who tended to Pilgrims on their way to Santiago! He set up a hospital, a church, a bridge, and his famous paved causeway (calzada) that gave travelers an alternative to rough Roman roads! He is most famous for a miracle involving a young German pilgrim who was framed by a local innkeeper’s daughter and executed. His parents continued on to Santiago then had a dream of Santo Domingo saving their son! On their way back home, they found their son, alive, still on the gibbet! When they went to the local magistrate to have him cut down, the magistrate scoffed and said their son was as alive as the grilled chickens on his plate. That’s when both chickens jumped up and started to sing! The youth was promptly cut down!
HOW CAN I HELP KEEP IT HISTORICAL? IT’S EASY!

  • You can be a responsible visitor! That means respecting the signs and pathways and treating all structures and artifacts with respect! After all, they’ve endured a lot already to make it into the present! They’ll need our help to make it to the future!
