Devils Postpile National Monument!

Devils Postpile National Monument

What Is Devils Postpile National Monument?

The Devils Postpile is one of the world’s finest displays of columnar basalt, much like Devils Tower, that sits in a tiny monument on the east side of the Sierras!

What Makes It Beautiful?

The hexagonal shape of the basalt talus creates some rich textures in the late afternoon light! I found my eyes moving up and down the postpile, absorbing its patterns. This was even more fun on top of the postpile, where, in addition to the neatly polished, glistening honeycomb pattern, the views of the pine forest and the distant, rocky Sierras stirred my soul!

How Can I #HelpTheHelpers?

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer at Devils Postpile National Monument!
  • Become a member of the Sequoia Parks Conservancy!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Remember the old adages: Pack out what you pack in! Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints!

How Do I Get There?

The Main Entrance is located about 14mi (23km) west of Mammoth Lakes on CA-203.

When Should I Visit the Park?

Winter makes the postpile pretty much off-limits, unless you have snowshoes and serious endurance. During the summer months, you will have to park at Mammoth Mountain and ride a shuttle into the park. I personally loved visiting in the autumn for Lastleaf when there weren’t many people around, the temperature was lovely, and the leaves were just starting to be wonderful!
