Drytown!

Drytown
Landmark #31 Amador County Visited: May 9, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? There’s a plaque on the north end of Drytown!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Founded in 1848, this is the oldest town and first in which gold was discovered in Amador County. Its venerable town hall and other picturesque structures remain. The town was not “dry,” as the name implies-it once contained 26 saloons.

OTHER TIDBITS: Drytown held on to its boom for eight whole years, thanks to a quartz gold discovery to boost the placer prosecting! About 200-300 miners lived here at its height, but as of the last census, that number is down to 167!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Amador County Historical Society!
  • Become a member of the Amador County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
