Dogtown Nugget Discovery Site!

Dogtown Nugget Discovery Site
Landmark #771 Butte County Visited: July 10, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque on the side of the road!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The Dogtown nugget was discovered April 12, 1859 at the Willard Claim, a hydraulic mine in the Feather River Canyon northeast of the town.

OTHER TIDBITS: After reading this plaque, you may be left wondering what the heck was the Dogtown nugget! It was a 54-pound gold nugget, the largest in the world at the time (nowadays, it’s the 159-pound Welcome Stranger Nugget from Australia)!

This town got its name thanks to the enterprising Mrs. Bassett, who settled here with three dogs and not much else. When she couldn’t make it as a miner, she sold her dogs’ pups to lonely miners, and soon dogs outnumbered houses and people in the town, earning it the ever so appropriate name of Dogtown!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Butte County Historical Society!
  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
